Where can I return my containers?
We have a range of return points across the QLD:

Do I need to separate containers by material?
No, our machines will sort the containers based on materials for you. 

Can containers be crushed?
We prefer containers not to be crushed, as this helps with fast and accurate counting. However, if your containers are slightly damaged, that’s okay if the barcode and refund mark are still visible.

Can I keep the lids on?
Yes – we accept containers with lids on as these get recycled too.

Why are some containers not eligible?
Eligibility
is determined by Queensland legislation. Refunds apply to drink containers typically consumed away from home. The refund represents the deposit you paid at purchase.

How is Return-It different from kerbside recycling?
Return-It lets you reclaim the 10c deposit on eligible containers, while kerbside recycling doesn’t track individual refunds. Return-It complements kerbside recycling by reducing litter and encouraging recycling outside the home.

What do I need to know before I go?

  • The refund points will only accept eligible items included in the scheme. Click here to check what's included
  • Check each individual locations operational hours on the locations page
  • Containers do not need to be washed, just completely empty
  • Refund points will not accept rubbish
  • Depots do not get full
  • Do not crush your containers

Organisations can register with Containers for Change to receive a unique member number attached to the organisation’s bank account. Anyone in Queensland can donate their containers to the organisation by quoting that number when returning their containers to a refund point.

Organisations can promote their member number to their community network to encourage donations, or perhaps collect containers at events they host or run a container collection drive.

How do I get my refund?
You can choose how you receive your refund:

  • Instant Cash – At Cash-back Depots
  • Electronic Payment – Via your member number
  • Donation to Charity – Select your charity via the app or input their unique member number

How long does it take to receive my refund?
It can take up to 10 business days for your refund to appear in your nominated account or PayPal. However, most payments are processed within 48 hours. You can check the refund history page of the app to see the status of your refund.

How do I set up a member number?
Sign up Here: You can get a member number by signing up through the app or by registering online. Once you create an account, your member number will be issued automatically.

Having a member number allows you to track your return history and progress in the app or by logging into your account. Please note that at some refund locations, using your member number may be the only available payment option, so we recommend checking the payment options at your chosen refund point before heading out.

Where can I collect a cash refund from?
At Cash-back Depots. Head to the locations page to see your closest depot. 

What do I do if I haven't received my refund?
If you have not yet received your refund, please contact us with the following ready to go: 

  • A copy of your receipt (if you have one)
  • The location name of your return
  • The date and time of your return
  • Member number (if you have one)
  • The number of containers you returned

How do I sign up for the app?

Get the app
Go to your phone's app store, type in the search bar 'Containers for Change QLD' and download.
Sign up by creating an account, confirm your email and enter your preferred bank account or PayPal details or choose a charity to receive your donations automatically.
