Rob has always been the kind of person who shows up when it counts. A long-time volunteer firefighter, he spent years on the frontlines—raising funds, fighting fires, and helping his community in any way he could. But when he stepped away from the fire brigade and into a new role at Mercedes-Benz in Glen Waverley, he thought his days of making a big impact might be behind him.
Turns out, they were just getting started.
It began with something small—barely noticeable, really. A few 10c bottles and cans, tossed carelessly into the bin at work. Rob saw more than just rubbish. He saw opportunity.
"I thought, instead of letting this go to waste, why not turn it into something good?" Rob recalls. His idea was simple: collect the containers and donate the money to a cause close to his heart—the Good Friday Appeal, which supports sick children and their families across Victoria.
When he pitched the idea to his boss, the response was immediate and enthusiastic. Not only did his team at Mercedes-Benz back him—they matched every dollar he raised. Then the dealership’s owner jumped on board too, kicking in a generous $1,000 donation to get the wheels turning.
What began as a humble tub in the workshop corner quickly turned into something much bigger. To date, Rob has returned nearly 17,000 containers, raising thousands for the Good Friday Appeal. And he's just getting started.
He’s since launched a public fundraising page with a goal as bold as his vision—$2,025, to match the year. The response has been incredible. Containers now come in from Rowville to Sorrento, with pubs, clubs, breweries, and everyday people all chipping in to support Rob’s mission.
To keep up with the growing mountain of cans, Rob partnered with the Springvale depot, using their high-speed counting machines to process massive loads in record time.
“Honestly, if I didn’t have a job, I’d take a van around Victoria collecting cans all day to help the kids,” Rob says with a grin. But his impact proves you don’t need a van or a title to make a difference—you just need heart, hustle, and a little creativity.
Rob's journey is a shining example of how one person can turn small actions into something extraordinary. From the floors of a car dealership to the halls of a children's hospital, every can collected is a symbol of hope, powered by community and driven by kindness.
