In Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, Ana is turning bottles and cans into something far more valuable—a brighter future.
Thanks to the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic), Ana has found a way to earn extra income by collecting eligible drink containers from local parks and her neighbors in Endeavour Hills. With support from her community - many of whom leave containers out for her, she makes regular trips to the Hallam and Springvale depots. “Those fast-counting machines make it easy,” Ana says. “I can drop off a big load and be on my way in minutes.”
What started as a small side hustle has grown into a powerful personal mission. Ana is now saving for her first car—something she never imagined would be within reach. “Each deposit brings me closer,” she says proudly.
But the journey isn’t just financial. The daily routine of walking, collecting, and connecting with locals has boosted her mental health and strengthened her sense of purpose. “Being outside, moving, and having little chats along the way - it’s really lifted my spirits,” she shares.
Ana’s respectful approach has also made her a welcome presence in the neighborhood. “I always ask before collecting, and people appreciate that the containers are being properly recycled,” she says. “It’s nice to build those little connections.”
Her story shows that CDS Vic is about more than recycling. It’s about empowerment, community, and the unexpected ways positive change can take shape - sometimes one container at a time.
