In the heart of the Dandenong Ranges, the volunteers at Emerald State Emergency Service (SES) are known for answering the call when storms hit, trees fall, and emergencies strike. But lately, they’ve been making headlines for something a little different—bottles and cans.
Since November 2023, Emerald SES has been quietly transforming into a community-powered fundraising machine by becoming an Over-the-Counter (OTC) return point for the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic). They were the first community group in the state to take on this role and they’ve absolutely crushed it.
What started as a simple plan to help cover the fuel bill for one of their 4WD response vehicles quickly grew into something much bigger. The team estimated they might raise around $12,000 in the first year. Fast forward just nine months, and they’ve raised over $25,000 and processed more than 500,000 containers.
That’s right - half a million drink containers, turned into crucial funding that keeps their emergency services running.
But this isn’t just about dollars. It’s about connection.
Locals now regularly visit the Emerald SES depot to drop off their recyclables, knowing that their small act of sustainability is directly supporting the volunteers who might one day come to their rescue. And as people return bottles, they’re also learning more about storm preparedness, how the SES operates, and even how they can get involved. Some have—new volunteers have joined the ranks after simply turning up to drop off containers.
For a unit that’s constantly on the move, often one of the busiest in the state - traditional fundraising can be tough. But this smart, sustainable initiative has created a reliable income stream without taking time away from the important work of keeping the community safe.
And let’s not forget the “green” side of things. Every container returned means less litter, less landfill, and a stronger message about environmental responsibility. It's community service with a sustainability twist—and it's catching on.
The Emerald SES story is a shining example of how a little creativity, a strong mission, and a lot of community spirit can turn something as ordinary as a can into something extraordinary.
So next time you’re holding an empty drink bottle, think of the team in orange vests, and maybe consider where your 10 cents could go.
Here’s to many more milestones, more volunteers, and a community that continues to rally behind those who always have our backs.
