Where can I return my containers?
We have a range of return points across the East of Victoria:
- Cash-back Depots
- Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs)
- Over-the-Counter (Small Format) Sites
Click on the locations page to find your nearest return point.
Do I need to separate containers by material?
No, our machines will sort the containers based on materials for you. However, if you use one of our OTC (Over-the-Counter) return points, they may ask you to separate your glass containers from your other containers.
Can containers be crushed?
We prefer containers not to be crushed, as this helps with fast and accurate counting. However, if your containers are slightly damaged, that’s okay if the barcode and refund mark are still visible.
Can I keep the lids on?
Yes – we accept containers with lids on as these get recycled too.
Why are some containers not eligible?
Eligibility is determined by Victorian legislation. Refunds apply to drink containers typically consumed away from home. The refund represents the deposit you paid at purchase.
How is Return-It different from kerbside recycling?
Return-It lets you reclaim the 10c deposit on eligible containers, while kerbside recycling doesn’t track individual refunds. Return-It complements kerbside recycling by reducing litter and encouraging recycling outside the home.
What do I need to know before I go?
- The refund points will only accept eligible items included in the scheme. To check what's included here

- Refund points will not accept rubbish

- Do not crush your containers

Do I enter in cans in first and then use the app?
If you are using an RVM, start by entering your containers, one at a time.
After you are done, select enter Zone ID and scan your barcode underneath the scanner on the right. Your phone will not fit inside the scanner, hold it flat to the machine about 5cm below. If it does not scan, you can manually enter in your zone ID. Please ensure you have entered all the correct numbers before continuing.
If you are at a depot and using a fast-counting machine, put all your containers onto the belt and the team will ask for your zone ID at the end of your transaction.
